Location Summary
Since 2016, humpback whales have been seen more regularly in San Francisco Bay. In 2019, critical habitat designation was proposed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as far east as the Golden Gate Bridge. This area was given a Very High conservation value. Considering the urbanized nature of the Bay, the potential for anthropogenic impacts to marine populations is high as vessel traffic and habitat overlap in space and time, and the area is transitted by a wide variety of vessel types, including large-scale shipping, ferries, and recreational boats. Data from this site is used to assess impacts from vessels on marine mammal species in the area.
