Location Summary
Seasonal Management Areas (SMAs) along the US East Coast protect endangered North Atlantic right whales from vessel strikes by limiting vessel speeds in their feeding and calving grounds and on their migratory routes. The Mobile Marine Monitor (M3) uses both radar and AIS to help assess speeds and compliance with SMA rules.
