Monte León, Argentina
Location Summary
Partnering with Global Conservation, Por el Mar (PEM), and the National Parks Administration of Argentina, ProtectedSeas is seeking funding to support the deployment of an M2 system to the Monte León National Park in the Santa Cruz Province of Argentina. Just offshore of the national park is the recently enacted Monte León Interjurisdictional MPA, which is over one thousand square-kilometers and home to one of the country's largest concentrations of kelp forest. The MPA is also a key breeding ground for the southern king crab, a primary and economically important fishery within the province. The coastal kelp forest also helps sustain numerous other species, including the Magellanic penguin, South American sea lion, Commerson's and southern right whale dolphins, and three species of cormorants. M2 is well-suited to monitor the new coastal MPA and surrounding area which can help ensure these species and their habitat are effectively protected.
