Coal Oil Point, Santa Barbara, California

M2 Deployed Here!

Location Summary

Deployed in 2017, this M2 system monitors activity in the vicinity of Campus Point State Marine Conservation Area (No-Take) which protects areas of rocky reef and kelp forest from fishing activities. The system also documents shipping traffic in the busy Santa Barbara Channel where ships are asked to voluntarily slow their transit speeds when whale species are present in the area. M2 provides a tool for monitoring ship speeds in real-time and analyzing past activity. Uncharacteristically slow speeds are used to identify potential hazardous events, such as ships going adrift near the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
