Calabash and Maugre Caye Belize
Funding Opportunity
Location Summary
Maugre and Calabash Caye are part of the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve, located 50 kilometers east of the central coastline of Belize in the Mesoamerican Reef region. While there is little development on the remote atoll, the area is popular for tourism and small-scale fishing, which has significant ecological, economic, and cultural benefits. In 2021, Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association (TASA) deployed an M2 system at Caye Bokel that monitors human activity near a multi-species spawning aggregation site, critical for maintaining local fish populations.
An M2 on Maugre and Calabash Caye would expand the range that TASA can monitor and help ensure poachers are intercepted. M2 is one of many technology tools that TASA uses to protect the diverse and fragile ecosystem and maintain the rights of local users. Global Conservation has committed to matching funds to support the deployment of additional M2 systems with TASA. Learn more about TASA’s work protecting this important place.
