Turneffe Atoll, Belize
M2 Deployed Here!
Location Summary
This site monitors vessel activity in the area of the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve in Belize co-managed by Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association (TASA). The reserve covers over 500 square miles (1,300 square km) where commercial and recreational fishing and tourism activities are common. M2 is just one technological tool being used to support TASA Conservation Officers' daily patrols in the reserve, where they document and manage user activity to ensure all fisheries and reserve regulations are adhered to. A key piece of information M2 provides is activity of interest occurring at night which has previously been more difficult to monitor, especially poaching from small vessels that cannot be detected from shore.
